How To Ruin a Perfectly Good Country

To get started, enshrine ignorance and elevate folly. Elect people to high office who don't know much about history, for instance, and then let them have pretty much unfettered powers free from the checks and balances that were originally concocted in order to keep things from getting ruined.

Be sure that your children graduate from school and enter adulthood even more ignorant of their history than their leaders are, and be sure that they are equally clueless about their system of government.
Original news source

Microsoft’s Xbox Live is five years old and has come a long way since it launched in November of 2002. Last100 looks at the state of Xbox Live today, and explores how Microsoft might enhance it in the future.
Original news source

UDP hole punching

NAT traversal through UDP hole punching is a method for establishing bidirectional UDP connections between Internet hosts in private networks using NAT. It does not work with all types of NATs as their behavior is not standardized.

The basic idea is to have each host behind the NAT contact a third well-known server (usually a STUN server) in the public address space and then, once the NAT devices have established UDP state information, to switch to direct communication hoping that the NAT devices will keep the states despite the fact that packets are coming from a different host.
Original news source

Unusual software bug

A heisenbug is a computer bug that disappears or alters its characteristics when it is researched.

One common example is a bug that occurs in a release-mode compile of a program, but not when researched under debug-mode; another is a bug caused by a race condition. The name "heisenbug" is a pun on the "Heisenberg uncertainty principle," a quantum physics term which is commonly (yet inaccurately) used to refer to the way in which observers affect the measurements of the things that they are observing, by the act of observing alone (this is actually the observer effect, and is commonly confused with the Heisenberg uncertainty principle).

Far Infrared sauna, Home saunas. Developed in 1965

Far Infrared sauna heaters for the first time were developed in 1965 by the doctor Tadashi Ishikava who works at the Fuji Medical’s R&D department. Only after 14 years of thorough medical researches this technology was allowed for the public use. Regular infrared sauna sessions are an effective help for elimination of such ailments as, for example, insufficient blood circulation in the limbs (known as “cold feet” typical for elderly people).
Original news source

Microsoft hires Linux security guru Crispin Cowan

Microsoft has added yet another big name to is Windows Security team: Crispin Cowan. These hirings have become old hat at this point, but this one has an interesting twist in that Cowan is renowned as a Linux security expert. He is the brains behind the StackGuard compiler, which is designed to turn out applications that are resistant to buffer overflows. Cowan also was the CTO and founder of Immunix, which produced a hardened Linux OS and was acquired by Novell in 2005.
Original news source

Building a .com in 24 hours

This is about how I spend 24 concentrated hours spread out over 4 days during Holidays to build the online service Wigitize.com. It is part of my ongoing learning process on how to run a successful web startup.

Even though I’m a super pimple-faced code-geek, I strive to be a creative entrepreneur who can utilize modern day tools and navigate the chaos to build cool stuff. What I tried to do for this project is use some new methods/tools out there to solve practical problems in my weakness area: design, frontend coding, system administration and SEO.
Original news source

Optimizing and Tuning Your MySQL Database

Even the most well-designed database, functioning on its own or as part of an application, needs to be maintained. This hour is part of a 3-hour set of administrative lessons that will give you pointers for optimizing and tuning your database so that you get the most bang for your buck. Think of your database like a garden -- basic water and sunlight will allow it to grow just fine, but a little extra plant food will help it flourish.
Original news source

Use Web Fuel, Get Acquired

An exit for a startup company is often crucial in obtaining maximum reward and success. Compared to liquidation when a company’s physical assets are sold or auctioned due to the lack of viability in a company’s prospects, an exit provides to an acquiring company the ability to ultimately improve customer satisfaction, with a startup able to place a premium on its price based on the value that it adds to an acquirer in this way.
Original news source

The Storm worm first appeared at the beginning of the year, hiding in e-mail attachments with the subject line: "230 dead as storm batters Europe." Those who opened the attachment became infected, their computers joining an ever-growing botnet.

Although it's most commonly called a worm, Storm is really more: a worm, a Trojan horse and a bot all rolled into one. It's also the most successful example we have of a new breed of worm, and I've seen estimates that between 1 million and 50 million computers have been infected worldwide.
Original news source
